Might be good

ILT might be good but I dont know that. Help to convince me by pointing me in the right direction. What do I do next? What do I buy? Where do I go?

Belgium. They're playing the Rockherk festival in a week or two (info a few threads down).

Either of the LPs are readily available & reasonably priced on Amazon.

There's doubtless loads of official & less than official downloads at the usual places.

If you want to hear one song that sums them up, then go for When We Were Kings (in my opinion, naturally).

Then pledge some cash to the new LP and don't look back.

If I were to pick one song as an introduction, it'd be A Rook House For Bobby.

Older stuff defines iLT. They are moving in a new direction, but I think most fans became hooked with Progress Reform. Since it's an EP, it doesn't even cost that much. Basically, everything on that EP is incredible, but if you wanted to get to the great stuff, I'd recommend Stainless Steel, The Beeching Report, and Before the Curtains Close, pt. 2. These three tracks close the EP and are pretty much the best hattrick of iLT songs in existence. That's where I'd start and there's plenty of places to go from there.

just pledge for the boxset to see how good they are.

personally I'd go for Stainless Steel, Victress and We Saw the deep as an intro to the band, covering all bases musically as it were.

This is a respectable recommendation. It does really capture three distinct periods of the band.

Ah, I wasn't going for my favourite, just my favourite of the new material as a pointer of where they're headed.

Wonder if Mr Damplip has taken anyone's advice?

Well its taken a bit of time but I have been listening to Progress Reform for the last week. I managed to borrow it from a train enthusiast I gave it to as a birthday present 4 years ago.

Slow burner I can best describe it as. Rook House was initially the only track which stood out but since then Stainless Steel has become a favourite. I guess they come over as a good live band once you are already familiar with their material.

No doubt the regulars here will have moved on from 4 years ago but you have a head start so you will probably have discussed all this before infinitum.

Not looked up any lyrics yet but on Rook House does it really say ' they build mountains out of tomatoes'?

I really wish it was 'mountains out of tomatoes'! Unfortunately it is 'mountains out of molehills'. It is a common English expression to describe an over exaggeration.

Thanks for taking the time to listen to our band!

Well that would make more sense but the misheard version has more frisson but thank you for your polite English response.

Now I'm very hungry for a BLT. I don't have any tomatoes at the moment, though.

Well, I also recently discovered them, through a combination of a friend, last.fm and the mighty British Sea Power. I was immediatly in love, bought EP + CD, a t-shirt and about to pledge and ensure myself a copy. I find the conceptual side of Elegies incredibly interesting. I'm really looking forward to the next album. I also think it's great to see the members being so active on this forum and amongst their fans. It's a rare thing these days, but really something to be appreciative about.

I do consider trains to be a hard band to get into and generally they are there to be discovered solely. I remember playing some Trains songs to my little brother who looked at me and said 'the singer sounds like a drunken sailor'

Spencer Perceval is Trains best song, live and studio. I can't see it ever be topped.

Don't know if that's really true :) I've just discovered them for about a month and have already converted 4 people to trainism :) I guess it depends on receptiveness towards this kind of gloomy, epic music.
