13 OCTOBER

Another day, another short list of events?

On 13 October 1963 the term "Beatlemania" was coined after the Beatles' performance at the London Palladium.

It's a Roman theme today...

13th October

On this day in 54 Roman Emperor Claudius was fatally poisoned by mushrooms, supposedly by his wife Agrippina the Younger, making her 17-year-old son Nero his successor. He was buried in the Mausoleum of Augustus.

Claudius was often described as a sickly man, dominated by his wife and staff, although despite this he is well known for his expansion of the Roman Empire, and conquering of Briton, having received the surrender of eleven kings whom were defeated without any loss on the Romans side.

Today is also Fontalia, the festival of Fontus, the Roman god of spring. Fontus was the son of Janus, the god of passage, and of Juturna, the goddess of spring. His festival of the fountains, was celebrated traditionally by scattering flowers over the sources and springs.
The Roman holidays were celebrated to worship gods or mythological occurances.

I've opted for famous Battles today...

14th October

Harold II of England (Harold Godwinson) was killed on this day at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

Harold was the last crowned Anglo-Saxon King of England, claiming the throne for himself following Edward the Confessor's death. His death, as traditionally suggested, was by an arrow through the eye at the Battle of Hastings. The battle, depicted in the famous Bayeux Tapestry, was famously won by the invading Norman Duke William who wished to assert his claim to the throne of England.

Also on this day in 1322 the Battle of Old Byland (also known as the Battle of Byland Moor) took place between Scottish and English as part of the Wars of Scottish Independence. The Scots won, led by Robert the Bruce , a significant battle since his famous victory at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

Someone I missed out in today's listing was Bing Crosby...

Currently the most electronically recorded human voice in history (as at 29/12/2006), Harry Lillis "Bing" Crosby received a Grammy Lifetime Acheivement Award in 1962 and an Oscar for his performance in Going My Way. One of his most remembered musical hits was his recording of Irving Berlin's White Christmas.

He died of a heart attack following a round of golf at La Moraleja golf course near Madrid, Spain and was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City, California. His tombstone reads: "Beloved By All"
