Our old pub quiz used to have a weekly "disease question", I wish I'd known you back then...

Haha, yes, that is quite a good one. I've never even heard of that disease before.

Moby Dick by Melville published today.. which I guess is marginally more interesting than the fact that on this day in 1987, Debbie Bennett won the Sam's Town National Bowling Pro-Am

December 4th

On this day in 1952 a deadly smog created by the smoke soot and sulfur dioxide from the factories, cars and coal fires in local homes begins to hover over London which continues for four days, leading to the deaths of at least 4,000 people.

Also on this day in 1872, a crew from the Dei Gratia, a small British brig, spot the Mary Celeste at full sail near the Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The ship was seaworthy, its stores and supplies were untouched, but not a soul was onboard.

The fate of her crew has been the subject of much speculation. Theories range from alcoholic fumes to underwater earthquakes and waterspouts, along with paranormal accounts such as aliens, sea monsters and the Bermuda Triangle. The Mary Celeste is often described as the archetypal ghost ship, since she was discovered derelict without any apparent explanation.

1961: Pill was made available on the NHS
The female oral contraceptive, or ‘pill’, was made available on the NHS on this day in 1961, kicking off the era of free love. Apparently, comedian Ronnie Corbett was born on this day in 1930 so some might say the invention of the pill came 31 years too late
